Lots of fish landed at Boondooma

Despite lower dam water levels there was an excellent turnout for the 17th Boondooma Dam Yellowbelly Fishing Competition. A total of 512 competitors, including 110 juniors, weighed in 392 fish. This is an excellent result as 518 competitors weighed in 301 fish in 2006.

Good weather conditions set the scene for a great weekend of camping, fishing and family activities. The Saturday morning session was the most productive with 186 fish weighed in.

Hanwood Fish Farm Champion junior anglers were Kate Schaefer of Brigalow who weighed in a 1.425kg yellowbelly and Jason Chesterton of Kingaroy who weighed in a 1.220kg Australian bass.

Adult angler Robert Reid of Urangan took out the ‘Buccaneers’ heaviest yellowbelly with a 1.515kg fish and Shaun Manthey of Nanango won the heaviest Pioneer Permanent Building Society with his 1.45kg Australian bass.

The major lucky draws were sponsored by Carsburg Grains, Handy Hire, Hans Continental Smallgoods, Leon Harris Motor Trimming, Kingaroy Mower Centre, Kingaroy Canvas and Camping, Buccaneers, EvaKool Ice Boxes, Auzland Homes, Dean Chesterton Homes, Tarong Energy, Kingaroy Great Outdoors and Marine, Ergon Energy, Golden Spurs Hotel, Reliance Petroleum, Tingoora Hotel, Woolworths, Hivesville Hotel, Carrollee Hotel, Bass to Barra Marine, Pristine Lures, and Wondai Plumbing and Hardware.

Huston Ford and Ransen Timber Company provided the junior winner and runner-up prizes and Allround Angler of Caboolture provided the runner-up prizes in the adult section. Sponsorship by South Burnett Times and CrowFM also ensured the event was publicised in the local area.

The event provided a boost to the local economy with more than 1000 campers enjoying the great facilities provided by Wondai Shire Council at Lake Boondooma. Many of the campers extended their stay to visit other tourist attractions including Boondooma Homestead, the Wondai Timber Museum and local wineries.

The Boondooma Dam Fish Stocking and Management Association, the Proston Local Ambulance Committee, and the Proston Lions Club would like to thank all competitors and sponsors for their continued support.

The next competition will be held on February 9 and 10, 2008.
