‘Yaking up Snapper
  |  First Published: March 2007

Stuart Thompson is a dedicated kayak angler who uses all of his free time to fish from his faithful orange Scupper Pro at Palm Beach Reef, Kingscliff Reef or Black Rocks near Pottsville NSW.

Stu trolls hard bodies and floats pillies for snapper, tailor, mackerel and other sportfish but has been jigging and floating soft plastics over reef and rubble bottom recently. His choice weights are 1/4oz to 3/4oz depending on the currents.

On a recent trip Stu caught this impressive 7kg snapper south of Kingscliff Reef on 10kg Berkley Fireline, 10kg leader on a Shimano TSS4 reel and a 10kg Silstar rod. He was fishing with a Berkley 4” Jerkshad in watermelon on a 1/4oz jighead.

Stu said this 7kg snapper put up a good fight and went hard for the first 10 minutes. It took five minutes for Stu to get the big red into the kayak and he was very relieved when he got back to shore with his impressive catch. – Brad Dicker
