Warm water ready to roll in

Those fishing the beaches lately would have noticed how many bluebottles have been washed up, a sign the warm water is out there around the continental shelf.

Some good yellowfin tuna have been caught to kick off the game season. Often the best fishing is around the moons when the current really gets moving. You can expect striped marlin, yellowfin tuna and striped tuna but the current can also deliver the unexpected.

Fishing around the Eden area has started to pick up with some good catches of sand flathead and tiger flathead by those drifting over the sandy patches.

The inshore reefs have been producing some good catches of snapper and morwong. Fishing for pan-sized snapper will only improve as the water warms while kingfish should come on the bite as the warmer water makes its way inshore.

The Kiah River has been fishing well for flathead and some quality bream. The rivers are still just flowing but more rain is needed over spring to keep things moving.

Fishing at Wonboyn Lake is really starting to pick up. Over the past month yellowfin bream, black bream, flathead and jewfish have all been caught.

Fishing in the river has been good with flathead caught from the shallow, weed-fringed bays with soft plastic lures accounting for some good fish.

It pays to put in a few casts because often they can take a bit of stirring up. Another thing to try is a change of lure, as this can also fire them up.

Fishing structure like snags, oyster leases and rocky edges has been productive for black and yellowfin bream. Some quality fish were caught on little hardbody lures as well as the purple Firebolt Longtail Minnow.

Out in the lake flathead are being caught around the shallow margins.

Fishing at night with fresh bait puts you in the box seat for catching a jewfish. Prior to Christmas and at Easter would be the best time to fish for a jewie, with the biggest fish for the season usually caught during these periods.

Between the lake and the entrance there can be some great fishing for sand whiting as the water warms.

Black and yellowfin bream have been caught in the Wonboyn River, especially around structure.
