For the first evening event of the MotorGuide BASS Electric Series, 73 anglers and 43 boats made the journey to Maroon Dam. With limited car parking spaces, due to the rising dam, it was a surprise that everyone managed to find a place to park their car and trailer.
On arrival at the dam at 2.30pm there was a substantial breeze kicking up waves. Luckily, the wind soon dropped out with only a slight breeze greeting anglers for the 4pm start. The conditions were perfect with a comfortable air temperature and still-flowing creek allowing anglers to fish the upper reaches of the lake and its adjoining creek.
True to Maroon’s standards, 90% of anglers caught up to 30 fish, although most of them were undersized. Some of the anglers tried surface fishing for bass for their first time, with amazing results.
First placed angler Luke Clark won top spot on his first ever event – he became an ABT member for the first time that afternoon. He travelled to the back of the lake to catch his winning bag, and by hitting the shallow points, Clark picked up his larger fish with spinnerbaits early and a Megabass Anthrax later in the session.
A total of 78 bass graced the scales with an enthusiastic field satisfied with the sensational edge bite on offer on the newly risen waterway. Hopefully it'll be sign of the bass season to come. – Nicole Jovanovic
