In the past month a number of boats have headed out wide chasing yellowfin, with fish being caught around the continental shelf and on the Star Bank.

Yellowfin tuna to around 18kg, along with striped tuna are biting on trolled lures, while in closer there have been kingfish caught on lures and bait.

Good catches of sand flathead and gummy sharks have been made from Gabo Island through to the Arials. Unfortunately, not many days have been fishable, with big swell after big swell making it hard to get out to the fish.

Good gutters are to be found on the local beaches, with the best fishing to be had between Tip and Betka beaches. Salmon to 2kg and the odd good tailor are being caught on bait and lures.

The Bottom Lake has been fishing well with plenty of different species on offer. Good-sized trevally have been caught on soft plastics and bait. Plastics such as Berkley Minnows, Firebait Longtail Minnows and Capt Kev Minnows are all catching fish, while fresh baits of nippers and worms are working well.

Heaps of pinkie snapper have been caught, with only the odd fish over legal size.

Small tailor are in plague proportions and are a nuisance to soft-plastic anglers. These little fish gang up on your lures, making for an expensive day. Remember to slow down your retrieve if this happens and they will usually lose interest and go away.

There have been some big tailor among these fish with one specimen measuring 80cm. However, unless you are lucky, the bigger fish normally bite you off.

Good numbers of flathead are still being caught in the Bottom Lake, as well as yellowfin and black bream.

Goodwin Sands has been fishing well with some top bream caught around the weed beds. Bait anglers have been doing well using crabs and prawns; to keep amongst the action you need to keep moving.

Some great black bream have been on the bite in the Fairhaven area. One group of clients had a ball on quality fish using soft plastics and hard-bodied lures.

The majority of the flathead have been around 45cm, which is a great size for eating. What they lack in size they make up for in numbers.

The Top Lake has been fishing a bit slowly of late with plenty of moving about needed to bag a feed of fish. The rock walls in the Genoa River have had a few fish but it pays to know where the consistently productive areas are, as there are miles of rock walls.

Plenty of small bream are being caught in the rivers above Gypsy Point.

As with other estuaries on the South Coast, great bass fishing has been experienced over the past month, with small spinnerbaits and soft plastics catching some quality fish.

The Betka River has also been providing good fishing. Now that this system is closed and the water level rising, there is plenty of navigable water.
