Fish feeding up for Winter
  |  First Published: May 2007

Autumn is one of the best times to be fishing. The fish know Winter is approaching and really start feeding before the water begins to cool.

Autumn is when we should get some rain and this year is no exception with good rain falling in the past month.

Offshore fishing isn’t really affected by the amount of rain we have had, it’s more to do with the water temperature. This season water has been cold and as a result the kingfish have been non-existent.

Flathead have slowed down over the past month with good catches few and far between. On the other hand, good catches of gummy sharks are still being made by boats venturing offshore. The gummy action has been excellent with consistent catches of quality fish being regular for the past six months.

Fishing any of the beaches from Bastion Point around to Quarry Beach puts you in with a chance of a salmon, tailor or gummy shark. Fewer yellowfin bream and sand whiting were caught this year because of the cooler water.

The recent rains have made the rivers above Gypsy Point murky brown and the fishing has been very ordinary. The best results have been coming from spots downstream around Cape Horn.

Bream and flathead are featuring in the catches of bait and lure anglers. The best baits have been prawns and soft plastics have been catching flathead in the same area.

Moving out towards the Bottom Lake, there have been some good fish caught in the Narrows, mostly flathead, bream and tailor with the tailor spitting out whitebait when caught.

Some of the tailor are good-sized fish but unless you are fishing for them they normally end up biting off your lure or hook. Anglers trolling metal lures are catching a few fish to around 1.4kg.

Out in the Bottom Lake some good fish are being caught. The water is a murky brown so seeing fish is out of the question. Knowing where the fish should be and moving until you find them is the only way to go.

Good catches of black bream, yellowfin bream, pinkie snapper, flathead and tailor have been the norm. Best bait lately has definitely been fresh local prawns which can be scooped up with a dip net at night near the entrance or purchased from Wayne at Mallacoota Bait and Tackle.

With the dirty water the flathead have been good with the Red Rum Longtail Minnow catching plenty of fish to around 60cm; it is a stand-out lure in these conditions.
