The Rotary Club of Nerang and its major sponsor Blue Fin Boats will host the Rotary Blue Fin Hinze Dam Classic over the weekend of March 24-25.
This popular family catch-and-release competition is open to shore-based and boat anglers, and there are prizes in a variety of categories including lure, bait and fly.
Hinze Dam (Lake Advancetown) is located 10km west of Nerang on the Gold Coast in Queensland. Since its construction in1989, it has been stocked with Australian bass, saratoga, Mary River cod, golden perch (yellowbelly) and more.
Australian bass are the main target species in the Blue Fin Hinze Dam Classic, but there are other prize divisions as well – anglers can take home a prize for the longest saratoga, Mary River cod, golden perch and catfish. There’s also a prize for the longest fish caught from the shore.
The Senior and Junior winners in the baitfishing division and the Senior and Junior winners in the lurefishing division will be judged on a points-based system. The flyfishing section and shore-based section will follow a similar format.
Camping is free for competitors on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night in the shady parkland below the dam wall, so you’ll want to get in early to secure a great camp site. There are heaps of prizes to be won, along with some great entertainment and food provided by Rotary Nerang.
You can register on Friday night from 6.30pm and the prize giving and the two boat giveaways will start at 1pm on Sunday. With thousands of dollars worth of prizes and trophies up for grabs, it promises to be a great weekend for the whole family.
Entry is $75 for adults and $35 for juniors, and includes a competition shirt, lunch packs and a lure (junior entry excluding lunch is $25). Senior entries also go into the draw to win one of two Blue Fin boat and trailer packages, and thousands of dollars worth of other prizes – you don’t even have to weigh in a fish to win. Proceeds will be donated to local charities and community projects.
For competitors thinking of entering for the first time, remember Hinze Dam is an electric motor only waterway and petrol outboards need to be removed. Fishing permits are essential and you can pick them up at the dam.
