Baffle Creek Family Fishing Festival
  |  First Published: September 2013

Fishing for the perfect destination to keep the family happy this upcoming school holidays? Well sort out that tackle box and dust off the camping gear – you won’t catch better than the 3rd Annual Baffle Creek Family Fishing Festival, happening September 27-29 this year.

Baffle Creek, situated at the southernmost end of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, is a recreational angler’s heaven. Don’t be fooled by the name – this is a phenomenal 120km river system with a tidal reach of 35km and a widest point of over 2km. As one of the state’s last free-flowing rivers and a protected habitat, its clean waters and thriving mangrove forests are home to hundreds of water-dwelling species.

The Australia Day monsoon saw the Baffle break record levels and completely engulf the homes residents. The community rallied together to rebuild lives yet despite the hard times, event organisers were determined not to let this fishing party get pooped, rather be the best yet!

Competition fishing boundaries for 2013 encompass Baffle Creek up to 1770 Creek with all beaches and offshore zones inclusive.

Great prizes for a wide range of specie categories are up for grabs for both junior and senior competitors. From boating and fishing equipment to accommodation packages, everyone has a chance to take something home besides fantastic memories and a soothed soul!

The 3-day fishing competition kicks off Friday morning, with mechanical bull and karaoke providing the laughs on Saturday night. Sunday afternoon offers novelty competitions such as mullet throwing, rides for the kids and the presentations. Fireworks and music will close the event at sundown. The Festival’s bush-bar and canteen will be open all weekend – with all your other needs and treats (eg bait, fuel and groceries) on hand at the Baffle CBD.

Got a non-fisher in the family to convince? No worries! Along with the festivities, there’s plenty for them to do while you’re immersed in fishing bliss. Baffle Creek is the ultimate relaxation sanctuary for nature lovers while nearby Agnes Water/1770 is a traveller’s Mecca with funky cafes, restaurants, shops and pampering services set amongst tropical beaches and forest hiking trails. Adventure tours operate daily and between the Baffle and Agnes courses, any golf-lovers will be well satiated too!

For the full details, accommodation info and to enter, head to www.bafflecreeksportrec.org.au. Entry kits are also available from Tackleworld Bundaberg and Baffle Creek Rural & Fishing Supplies. Registrations received by the 20th September go into the draw for a Garmin depthsounder. So don’t delay – whether you bring your family, mates or club, this is one fishing pilgrimage you won’t regret making! – BCFFF
