Fishing quiet, but spring around the corner
  |  First Published: August 2013

I have spent some time recently looking over my past two years of reporting for the month of August. It was no surprise to me that the current fishing conditions are very similar to the past two years.

I don’t hold back my negativity when it comes to fishing in august around Shepparton; it’s a time of year where most local fish are shut down. You may hear the odd report of a cod or yellowbelly being caught but its very rare.

The channel systems are normally the go-to spots in August but the redfin have gone off the bite which is annoying as light gear and small lures chasing channel redfin is a great way to spend a couple of hours.

Waranga Basin is still very low and it seems that you have to be in the right place at the right time. Bite times are getting further apart with 5-10minutes of action every 1-2 hours. There has been a hand full of reports of redfin up to 40cm being landed towards Harrimans Roadd ramp but fish seem to be spread out and not yet in the bigger schools.

August is the last month we can target Murray cod and I know a lot of local fisho’s planning one last trip chasing the mighty green fish in local and interstate waters. It will be interesting to see how many monster cod are caught just before the close of the season.

I personally will be off to Mulwala for a few days chasing a big one, I will be using big spinnerbaits and trolling large deep diving lures. These techniques will work well in Shepparton waters but patience is the key at this stage of the season.

Adam Pearson Memorial Fishing Classic

Following on from the successful “Night with the Macks” recently held in Shepparton, Darren McDonald has organised another great event to help support the young family of Adam Pearson who passed away some months back.

The event will be held at Lake Eildon on the weekend of August 17-18, All proceeds will be placed into a trust fund to help support Adam’s two young daughters. This event will surely be one to get to and I hope a lot of Shepparton locals can make there way over for the weekend.
