Whiting the main species during July
  |  First Published: July 2013

During this time off year many anglers have made their way down to Portland to try their luck on SBT.

We have found that this year has been tougher than previous years, however we did still managed to find success just more patience was needed.

Now heading into July the weather starts to turn a little wild in Portland so many anglers pack up and head back home to test out their home ground.

So as we are heading back into Queenscliff where we can expect to find whiting, whiting and more whiting.

Whiting can be found in the bite and around Queenscliff.

You can also try the whiting over the other side in Sorrento, straight from the Sorrento boat ramp, look out for the weed and unbroken ground.

As for bait, pipis have been the best to use and as always has managed to deliver the goods.

You can expect that where you find whiting the squid can’t be too far away, so it does not hurt to through a jig around to test the waters.

The squid should start coming on around this time of year; the brighter jig were working the best the year, however the year prior it was all about the neutral colours.

So you need to get out there and give it ago and see what will work the best.

The best areas to try for squid are Swan Bay, St Leonards, Clifton Springs, Portsea and Sorrento.

Winter snapper in the bay are good fun for the person that is keen to brave the cold in anticipation for the red of a life time.

Snapper around the 6-9kg are common, so sound up a school and anchoring on it and then wait for the reels to scream off.

Though we are in mid-winter there still are plenty of fishing on offer, so if you are willing to brave the cold, you may find that it is worth the effort.
