Bemm River bream season is now at its peak
  |  First Published: June 2013

Winter is here and the official opening of the Bemm River bream season.

The entrance remains closed so the water level is good for anglers to access their favourite fishing locations. During the past month the dominant fish caught has been bream.

Stuart McConaghy and his crew obtained good catches of quality bream in the middle of the inlet but to the western end. Another successful location has been near the mouth of the river and near the entrance to Mud Lake. Average size of bream being caught has been around 32-39cm.

The occasional flathead has been appearing in the channel, but overall the channel has been quiet. One of Stu’s crew, Ganga, caught and released a 60cm flatty, which he caught on frozen prawn in the channel. Ganga also landed and released an 80cm flathead in the middle of the lake the following day.

Now that winter is here and the water has chilled off the flathead have gone quiet but with reports of these larger fish being caught and released it is a positive sign of an excellent pending spring season. With favourable weather conditions the surf beaches have been producing great catches of salmon and are taking hardbodied lures and most baits including pilchards and squids.

Jim Pocklington and Heather had their annual pilgrimage to Bemm amidst the wild weather. These two will fish in the most challenging conditions when others won’t venture out and always return with a smile on their faces and a good catch of bream. Their bream catches were on frozen prawn.

Barry Higgins and Margie Smith, of Heyfield also enjoyed productive fishing recently. Margie showed the way with landing a beautiful 43cm bream in the Siberia and Pelican Point location. Frozen prawn was their preferred bait. These two would be on the water at sunrise and enjoyed every moment of their recreational fishing trip.

In ideal conditions, the surf beaches are producing good catches of salmon. Hardbodies lures, squid and pilchards have been used by most anglers.
