Estuaries come alive
  |  First Published: November 2008

This is one of the best times of year to be fishing the estuaries in the Eden area, with everything starting to fire up after a long, cold winter.

Gamefishers will be waiting for the big fish to turn up out on the Continental Shelf, and closer to shore the sand flathead and tiger flathead will start to bite better as the water slowly warms.

As the days start warming further the bass in the local rivers will really start to come on the chew and those keen enough will put in the hour-long drive to Brogo Dam.

At Wonboyn and in the Kiah River anglers have been enjoying good fishing after a slow winter.

Flathead are being caught on soft plastics. It takes a bit of searching to find the fish but once they’re found, concentrate your efforts in the area using a variety of lures so you can come up with the lure that is working best.

The black bream are right up-river and they can be hard to catch – fishing with lures has been tough.

The best way to get a few bream has been to fish early in the morning or into the evening with live nippers and sandworms.

Blackfish are about with some good fish being caught by those using weed baits fished under floats.

The whiting come on the bite in coming months with the sand flats near the entrance a great spot to fish using baits like sandworms, beachworms and nippers.

Those fishing offshore for flathead, gummy sharks and the like should head down to the Pinnacles. There have been some good quality flathead caught there and and you are also in a great spot for gummy sharks.

Pinkie snapper to 2kg have been caught on the inshore reefs.

Salmon are still being caught on all the local beaches with lures a sure-fire way of catching fish once the school is located.

Anglers fishing the rocks have been getting some good catches of big blackfish on weed and cunjevoi. When using cunje on light line, a drummer will take the bait and that will be the last you see of that fish.

A few salmon have also been turning up along the rocky headlands.

All forms of fishing will start to fire up over the coming months, making Eden a great destination for a fishing holiday.

Peter is justifiably happy with this lure-munching flathead. There should be a few more around this month.
