Great action in close as big tuna season looks early

Fishing in Portland throughout January has seen a lot of holidaymakers and locals all enjoying what Portland has to offer from this terrific fishing destination.

Boating parties heading around from Lawrence Rocks and heading towards Cape Bridgewater have been retuning with good catches of flathead and gummy sharks.

Fishing in between the lighthouse and Cape Grant there have been mixed bags of blue morwong, coral perch, dusky morwong, snapper, flying gurnard, nannygai, and the odd mako up to 100kg along with school sharks.

Anglers targeting King George whiting have found the best areas have been from Point Danger through to Pivot Beach with sizes ranging from 30-60cm, with the best bait being SA pipis and using Stimulate Ultra bite ground berley.

King George whiting have also been caught off the Lee Breakwater along with snapper up to 7kg, calamari squid, gummy shark and school shark.

In and around the harbour off the marina and trawler wharf catches of calamari squid, snapper, whiting, bream, flathead, salmon and mullet have been keeping the young and not so young entertained.

Fishing along the north shore both boating and land based anglers have been catching salmon up to 3kg, school sharks, gummy sharks, whiting, snapper, mulloway and calamari squid along with yellowtail kingfish up to 9kg while fishing at Minerva reef.

Yellowtail kingfish were proving to be elusive as ever in early January but as the weather continues to warm up the kingfish should be in full swing. Give the boys a call for an update.

For those heading out to the continental shelf good catches of blue eye trevalla, ling, gemfish and blue grenadier and on one last outing there were also plenty of striped tuna breaking the surface, and with reports coming in from the west it looks like we may be in for an early bluefin tuna and albacore season.

Make sure all your gear is up to scratch and ready to go when the call goes out.

For all you latest fishing and weather reports give the boys at Portland Bait & Tackle a call on 0355235213, we are open 7 days a week from 7 till 7.
