BP Dam Family Classic back on calender

After some six years in hiatus and now with 100% water capacity, the Bjelke-Petersen Dam Fish Management Committee Inc. (BPDFMC) has decided to reinstate the once popular Bjelke-Petersen Dam Inland Family Fishing Classic set to be held on September 29-30, 2012.

The BP Dam fishing competitions of the past were some of the more premier events on the freshwater fishing calendar in Southeast Queensland and attracted up to 400 participants annually. With water levels high and fishing picking up we have the perfect opportunity to make this competition a huge event.

All funds raised from the fishing competition will be used to stock fingerlings into BP Dam to ensure that the excellent recreational facility is maintained. 580,000 fingerlings were released into BP Dam in the 2010/2011 stocking season, and 160,000 fingerlings were released in the 2011/2012 stocking season.

The economic benefits to the community from BP Dam have been valued by the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries to exceed $950,000 per annum. The money we raise this year from the competitions will be that much more important; it will be used to assist the Dam and the wider community recover from the 2011 floods.

The BPDFMC has had an enormous response from the community keen to see the competition up and running again. Without their very generous support we would not be able to host a successful competition with plenty of great prizes.

The competition will be called the Murgon Betta Electrical 2012 Bjelke-Petersen Dam Inland Family Fishing Classic. There will be prizes given away over the whole weekend as well as raffles during each session. There will be trophies presented for the overall Heaviest Yellowbelly Senior Angler (sponsored by Hanwood Fish Hatchery); Heaviest Bass Senior Angler (sponsored by Austackle); Heaviest Yellowbelly Junior Angler (sponsored by Kingaroy Great Outdoors & Marine); and Heaviest Yellowbelly Junior Angler (sponsored by T&P Fischle Towing & Mechanical).

There will be plenty of activities and fun to be had for all the family over the entire weekend. Nomination fees will be $20 for seniors, $5 for juniors (aged between 5 – 12), or $35 for a family of two adults and two children. Anyone entering the competition over the age of 18 must have in their possession a Stocked Impoundment Permit, which can be purchased at the Yallakool Caravan Park on BP Dam Kiosk.

For further information regarding the competition or for enquiries about accommodation options for the weekend, feel free to call Shona Divljak at the Yallakool Caravan Park on BP Dam Kiosk on (07) 4168 4746.
