Hervey Bay Family Fishing

Family fun was the order of the day for the 20th Annual Hervey Bay Family Fishing Competition held from 8-11 March.

A whopping 373 senior and 120 junior competitors fished the three days of the competition. Some were vying for a share of the prizes in the three ‘live’ and five ‘dead’ categories and others just enjoying the atmosphere at the evening raffles and weigh in.

Despite extensive flooding of the Mary River system in the weeks leading up to the competition, spirits remained high with ample enthusiasm from those who participated. The wild winds of the previous week thankfully abated and sunny skies presided for most of the event. Boaties spread far and wide throughout the Bay seeking the cleaner waters and a better chance of finding fish.

Competitors didn’t have to weigh a fish to be included in the major draws but all enjoyed the thrill of watching the weigh in. Notable catches included golden trevally to 6kg, barramundi to 12kg, tuna to 6kg, blackall to 4kg and king salmon. According to some competitors, finding the fish was relatively easy; the hard part was catching one worth weighing in. Some reported reaching bag limits of whiting on all competition days without getting one over 300g.

Good crowds were spotted fishing the piers and surrounding beaches during the weekend. Plenty of the family bread-and-butter species were also weighed in. Family outings provided an opportunity to enjoy each other’s company with the added enjoyment of a fish or two.

The many young anglers who fished the Urangan Jetty were out in force at all hours of the day and night but found the fishing pretty slow. However, the Junior’s daily prizes were selected by lucky draw from those who had weighed a fish in. This meant that even the smallest fish had a chance of receiving a prize.

Overall a wonderful time to meet fellow anglers, tell a few tall tales and enjoy the mateship that fishing brings. Put this family competition in your diary for next year. – Hervey Bay Family Fishing
