Tournament angling returns to Eungella Dam for the 7th annual Meng Group World Sooty Championship on 5-6 May.
This is the major fund raising event for the Mackay Area Fish Stock Association (MAFSA), and this year’s event will once again take place on the May Day long weekend. It will provide keen, and not so keen, tournament anglers a chance to tangle with Eungella’s legendary sooty grunter, one of Queensland’s premier freshwater sportsfish.
With steady water levels, healthy stocking levels and encouraging natural recruitment rates in recent years, anglers will never find Eungella firing more than it is right now.
“Eungella is fishing better than it has in a long time. Anglers are catching plenty of fish and they’re catching a lot of fish 40cm and larger,” said event organiser Jeff Eales.
The event isn’t only for the elite angler, with junior and family divisions combining to make the event a must-do for all keen catch and release competitors. Prizes abound at the event with a long list of participating sponsors joining forces to offer anglers a cache of cash and prizes.
The event is strictly catch and release, with the three session, two-fish per session event testing anglers’ consistency and ability to find the all important big fish bite.
The local Eungella Community Development Association we be on hand at the event providing catering for anglers and showing their support of the event.
If you’re a keen tournament angler, budding sooty grunter angler or simply wanting to visit Eungella for the first time then this event is for you.
