It’s time to break out the 30+ and a big straw hat as summer kicks in to full swing this month.
Coral Trout have been all over the shallow reefs around Big Woody Island and a few queenfish, up to 7kg, have been smashing live pike along the flats south of Moon Pt.
In Platypus Bay there should be spotties and longtails on the move and hopefully they will be feeding harder than they were before Christmas.
The National Pacific Gamefishing Classic was held on the 16-18 November and the usually productive inside grounds were very slow with only a few tuna, yellowtail kings and cobia being tagged. Nevertheless, some of the cobia were huge with a couple being lost at the boat. It was believed they were record fish on a 8kg line class.
The heavy tackle on the other hand was truly amazing. Black marlin, over 920lb, were captured on the first days fishing by a vessel named Mojo. These guys not only nailed the largest marlin ever captured (many more have been tagged) in theses waters but also managed to release several other large blue and black marlin during the rest of the tournament.
Outside on the light tackle grounds dolphin fish were in good numbers and size. An inflatable tender found floating wide of the spit was absolutely loaded with them and provided many teams with moments of mayhem.
When hooked, dolphin fish display an amazing array of colours and acrobatics and are truly one of the greatest light tackle sportfish around. They are also frequently escorted to the boat by one or many other dolphin fish, which are easily coaxed into taking a live bait as long as the hooked fish remains in the water.
Sailfish did make an appearance, as did a few small blacks, but in the end the tournament belonged to the guys who fished the big gear in over 150m of water.
Many thanks to all the sponsors that supported the tournament and the wonderful crew on the Tasman Venture 2, who put on first rate meals and accommodation.
