Go north go deep was the winning formulae in round one of the Berkley Summer Series.
Forty five teams lined up at the Southport ramp for the BIAS Boating classic. The 6am start still meant the sun was well up and the few clouds to provide some shade looked like they weren’t her to stay.
Cleaning up on the day was Team Logan River Marine’s Cory Tarr and Jay Morgan in their new Champion boat. With a cracking 5/5 for 2.905kg, including the tournament’s Big Bream at 1.09 kg, the pair easily took out the event. Fishing deep near Russel Island using Gulp! New Penny Shrimp plastics on Nitro 1/16oz and 1/8oz jigheads was the combination that brought them the big score.
In second place Team Megabass (Michael Starkey/Dean Silvester) weighed in an impressive 2.770kg of bream. Fishing the flats near Victoria Point, all their fish came on Megabass Dog X Junior lures in bright colours. Their technique was to give these large lures a sharp “walk the dog” action with pauses every five to ten seconds.
In third place was Team Mossops (Peter Herbst/Arthur Hatziper) and in fourth CD Rods (David McKenzie/Tristan Taylor). These top four teams qualify for the Classic series final in November 2008.
In 2007 the winner of this final took away a Skeeter package – so we look like seeing another great boat package for the 2008 final.
These Summer events are great - we see national champions, experienced competitors teaming up with their wife and teams like first timers Team Me and Dad, consisting of Conor McNaught (12) and Paul McNaught all fishing the same event and having fun.
