The dreaded big Ws that are common for this time of the year - wind and weed- plagued anglers as they fished the flathead round of the King of Moreton Bay Team Series.
34 anglers in 17 teams braved 20knot winds and rain at 5am as they set out to various parts of greater Moreton Bay with the Jacobs Well/Pin area being the most popular choice.
The rain quickly disappeared as the sun got up but the northerly winds showed no signs of abating and stayed fairly constant throughout the day. There was an early morning high tide and an analysis of the anglers catch sheets handed in showed that there were 2 distinct bite periods: 6am - 8am and 2pm - 3pm.
An interesting aspect of the day’s fishing was the number of other species caught during the day with bream and mulloway being the most common. Snapper, sharks, big sea toads and whiting were also mentioned by anglers at final check-in, especially by the teams who scored a big doughnut on flathead!
The winning team came from the Gold Coast. Well known flathead anglers Brett Rayner and Chad Patterson landed 9 legal fish for a score of 496 points. Runner up for the second time in this year’s competition was Team Stradic with 309 points and third place went to Team Austackle Gold with 258 points. The Austackle team also landed the biggest flathead of the day, a fantastic fish of 86cm. They also nailed a big mulloway which they were calling a big flathead initially until it peeled off over half a spool of line as it made its run for freedom.
We look forward to seeing all the teams again along with any new comers who wish to join in the fun and win some fantastic prizes. Remember you don’t have to be a great fisherman to win a prize. Thousands of dollars of prizes are given away as random draw prizes. All you have to do is be there! - Mike Cole
