723 anglers nominated for the Longreach Yellowbelly Classic fishing competition held on the banks of the Thomson River in Longreach. Competitor’s numbers once again exceeded the committee’s expectations.
Friday evening’s yabby’s were auctioned and they raced slowly toward the finishing line, holding its audience captivated and frustrated as the yabby’s were oblivious to the screams from owners to cross the line to win them their prize $$$$. Winner of race 1 was Kylie Hughes with number 9 as her favourite of the field for race 2 Kasey Hughes chose yabby number 1. Due to a 5 minute rain shower to settle the dusty track the Junior roll the swag competition was cancelled yet 3 adults took to the damp track with Ben Schweitzer swaggering across the line to win. Fridays junior lucky draw had to be redrawn a record 20 times before ticket number 61 belonging to Chloe Hutchinson excitedly claimed the prize of a tackle box with fishing accessories and only 5 draws found Dean Gallegas victorious for the adults lucky draw to win a Daiwa fishing rod combo.
Saturday and Sunday saw a steady and constant flow of fish being measured in. The rain had gone and the sun beat down hard and hot but importantly the fish were on the bite for many and yabbies were in hiding the whole weekend. Yabbies were in big demand at Saturdays auction before the race. Everyone wanted a piece of the prize money. 2 races were held and once again the audience was screaming with enthusiasm and words of encouragement at their racing yabby. Race 1 was won by number 9 for C. Ford and Race 2 winner was S. Thorn’s yabby number 1. The final heat in the junior roll the swag event saw Georgia O’Dell race victoriously to the finish line and Cody Zahl for the adults. The junior hand reel casting competition saw confident Kyle White the winner from 25 competitors and Lou Turlan won against his 16 adult competitors. Saturday night junior lucky draw was won by Daniel McNamara and the adults went to Ron Hilton.
