The Carlton Mid Flathead Classic
  |  First Published: September 2011

2011 marks the 18th year for the Gold Coast Flathead Classic and you don’t stick around for 18 years unless you are doing something right.

The Gold Coast Sportfishing Club has a proud history and is indebted to the clubbies who built the Flathead Classic. At the dawning of the classic the concept of catch and release was foreign to anglers and legend has it that one team of anglers returned with an esky full of dead flatties with tags in them! While those guys didn’t get it quite right, thankfully the concept has caught on and today anglers, and many tournaments, now practice catch and release.

In the 18 years of the competition there have been great tales of captures and comradeship, some of which we would love to gather before the 20 year anniversary. One thing for sure, once you fish a Classic you are hooked and destined to return to fish another. It also means making the event bigger and better every year is a real challenge, but one the committee and membership rise to with enthusiasm.

This year the faithful with gather from Wednesday September 28 at the registration and briefing evening from 4.30pm with fishing all day Thursday 29 and Friday 30 and a half day on Saturday October 1, with the entertainment and the presentation in the afternoon. Things are certainly hotting up with preparation and time ticking by quickly, so whether you are a Classic newbie or are returning for more, don’t miss out on your opportunity to fish the tournament. Check out our www.flatheadclassic.com.au for registration details.

So what is exciting about 2011 and why should you come and fish the Carlton Mid Flathead Classic? Who doesn’t need a few days away from it all and what better way to getaway than to fish with your mates and enjoy all the Classic has to offer. The tournament has built into much more than a fishing competition. It’s now quite an event with fantastic prizes and entertainment. We are very proud to have Carlton Mid on board, who bring along the fabulous Beer and Bar truck and the Carlton Mid promo team, and this year one lucky Classic angler a will take home $10, 000 cash thanks to Carlton Mid. All of the major prizes are awarded on a random basis meaning even if you do your backside fishing you still have the chance to walk away with a share of the prize pool.

As our Major prize sponsor, Gold Coast local boat builders Blue Fin Boats present the perfect estuary boat; the Wildcat 4.3m. Blue Fin has a reputation for quality and attention to detail and the Wildcat side console sport fish would be a perfect flattie platform. Blue Fin has a long association with the Classic and we appreciate their ongoing support. The award winning performance of a Suzuki DF 60HP 4-stroke will power the package thanks to the team at Suzuki Marine and White Water Marine. This will all be sitting on a quality Oceanic Trailer. Oceanic is a great Gold Coast business that builds excellent trailers using top components and we thank them for their support. This all adds up to an excellent major prize package that I am sure all of our competitors would be keen to get their hands on. Along with the major prize, the pool will be packed with some excellent fishing, boating and recreational gear and with new sponsors coming on weekly it promises to be huge.

The tournament will see anglers chasing flathead on lures or fly and even if you are not a seasoned lure fisho the humble flathead is a great fish to cut your teeth on, being partial to a soft plastic or a trolled hard body lure. 2010 saw the trolling anglers at the top of the leader board with conditions making plastics fishing a tougher option. Who knows what the weather gods will throw at us this year but it never ceases to amaze me no matter how tough the conditions anglers manage to find amazing sized and numbers of flathead.

Anglers just love the Classic and a feature is the get together at the end of each day with a hearty meal and plenty of laughs over a few beers. This year Catering by Clancy’s join the Classic family and they have a menu that will make your mouth water, check it out in full on our website.

When it comes to value the Gold Coast Flathead Classic delivers. Competitors receive a quality tournament shirt, a team tournament bag full of goodies and entry into the tournament with your chance to win big with the major prize draw and entry into the iconic event. On offer is some great fishing as it is peak time for big numbers of flathead and of course those big dusky crocodiles.

Will 2011 be the year we break the elusive metre mark? The Flathead Classic awards trophy categories to Champion Senior, Female and Junior individuals and Champion Team, Visiting Team, Mixed Age team as well as Champion 3 and 2 Person Teams along with trophy categories for many other species. We would love to see you come along to the 2011 Carlton Mid Flathead Classic and be part of what, for many, is an annual pilgrimage. Get your mates together and tell the boss you will be off for a few days to fish the 2011 Carlton Mid Flathead Classic. Believe me if you fish one you will be back for more!

We would like to acknowledge our tournament sponsors your support is much appreciated. We are welcoming new sponsors every week!
