Fishing Action Everywhere
  |  First Published: December 2010

Ballarat hasn’t seen this much rainfall for over 15 years and hopefully it keeps raining.

In the last month the waters that have been stocked with yearling rainbow or brown trout are Hepburn Lagoon, Lake Burrumbeet, Lake Bolac, Greenhill Lake, Deep Lake and Newlyn Reservoir.

Ballarat anglers have been out in droves to get their dose of fishing action around the district. The fish are only small up the 30cm size but plenty of fun to catch. We can only hope that anglers do the right thing and practice catch and release so at this time next year we will have cracking fishing action.

I went for a drive out to Newlyn Reservoir recently and it was great to see there were cars and anglers everywhere, nearly shoulder to shoulder, something I have not seen for many years. Only a few months ago Newlyn was a puddle and is now full and overflowing.

Lake Fyans continues to fish well.

The fishing action has been pretty good. We recently managed to land a couple of brown trout up to 1kg fishing with mudeyes suspended under a bubble float. The next morning I went out at daylight and landed another four trout up to 1.25kg, again with the same method. I was fishing out of a boat anchoring and drifting my mudeyes into the western end wall of the lake.

I would suggest that the lake will fish well over the summer period but anglers will have to fish during the early morning and evenings to gain the best results. All form of angling methods would be successful as the lake is a fantastic all-round fishery.

Lake Lonsdale nearby has seen plenty of action for those that like a feed of yabbies. The water is at a very high level not seen for many years. Greg Pitt recently had a trip up there and said there were 35 boats on the water yabbying. There are rules and regulations that must be obeyed whilst getting a feed of the magnificent tasting crustaceans.

Purrumbete

Lake Purrumbete at Camperdown continues to fish well. My brother Malcolm and his family recently had a few days down at the lake catching plenty of rainbow trout on mudeyes suspended under bubble floats. He fished all over the lake anchoring out from the weed beds and drifting the baits into them. He said the action was pretty hot and his two young children Jag and Chase having a great initiation into fishing at lake Purrumbete.

Fishing action over the next month in the district will be very good. Fish have been released everywhere into every water but we would hope that anglers take a sensible approach and practice catch and release for our future fishing in the coming year to be one of the best ever.
