If you are in the market for a small, affordable family fishing boat that is packed with tradition only the famous Haines Hunter brand brings, the Haines Hunter 495 ProFish is the boat for you.

The design of this boat has the young family who enjoy fishing in mind and it is the ideal entry model for any newcomer to the water. This model is also well suited to someone who wants to downsize their boat, but not miss out on a quality design.

I was pleasantly surprised with the cockpit room for a boat this size. The well laid-out interior design has ample storage capacity. Apart from the six rod capacity rocket launchers, there is room for another two rods, or net and gaff each side under the gunwales. Storage boxes at the rear of the boat are deep and roomy as well and offer ample storage for bait, food and drinks or the ability to convert into a live bait tank.

Storage capacity in the cabin is ample also. There are three under cushion storage compartments that provide plenty of room for safety gear or extra ropes and there are significant full length storage shelves inside the cabin as well.

For a young family, this boat has room for all the gear you will need for a pleasant day out on the water.

Handling and Performance

The boat sits nice and high out of the water on the plane, and is a remarkably comfortable ride for its size. There is no compromise in any design of Haines Hunter hulls when it comes to safety and manoeuvrability, and with this model, you get the feel of a much larger boat.

The 60hp Honda four-stroke got the boat on the plane and held there at 4500rpm. Top speed was 30knots sitting at 6000rpm and while the top speed would slow with a bit of headwind or choppy conditions, it is fast enough to get you from A to B at a reasonable speed.

The boat test was conducted with two adults aboard and had adequate power, however if you plan to have more than two persons on board, I suggest the boat be powered with a 75hp or 90hp. Either of these two engines would decrease the revs required to reach reasonable cruising speed.

The beauty of such a classy boat in this size bracket is that it has the handling of a larger boat, but accessibility and manoeuvrability of your average tinnie. There is nothing better than pulling up on a sand flat to pump bait, or sit in the shallows casting to dusky flathead or whiting and the 495 ProFish is easily manhandled in inches of water.

It also makes the ideal boat for pulling up on the beach for a family swim or picnic. It truly is a boat where size doesn’t matter, class and features do.

The Helm

The boat is very comfortable to drive from both standing and seated positions. The windscreen height is prefect height to offer spray and wind protection with the clears off and from the seated position, there were comfortable foot rests at the right height for the average person.

Any boat this size would benefit from a windscreen grab rail which is handy in sloppy conditions. The dash was well laid out with the Honda instruments evenly spaced and the flush mounted sounder and radio central to the drivers’ vision.

Inside the boat

The 495 ProFish has the capacity for four anglers however would be better suited to three adults or two adults and two children. The rear seats are removable which allows room for anglers to fight a fish comfortably at the rear of the boat.

A great feature of the rear seats is that no support legs are required which helps contribute to the neat finish of the interior. Another neat feature is the transom curtain, which hides the battery, cables, bilge, fuel lines and fuel filter. The test model was set up with single battery only, however there is provision for dual batteries behind the transom curtain.

This boat was also fitted with under the floor fuel tank, which doesn’t come standard but is highly recommended if you want maximum floor place for fishing.

The 495 ProFish features an open step down half cabin from the cockpit, which is a roomy 1.7m wide and 1.25m high. Access is easy and the provision of a stainless steel grab rail to hang on to if you need to reach for something in the cabin is a great safety feature.

The step down floor provides the room to move inside the cabin so as to not bump your head when accessing the under seats storage boxes. The anchor well and cleat are easily reachable from the cabin hatch, however if you are planning to fish in moderate to sloppy seas, bow rails would be a great option for something to hang on to while setting or retrieving the anchor.

Once at anchor, the boat is very stable and allows occupants to move around the cockpit area without any significant roll. A bait board (optional extra) will easily slot into the rear rod holders and provide a workbench for the keen angler while help with a clutter free cockpit.

Trailers and Towing

The New World Honda Marine team have joined forces with Easytow Trailers to be the first Haines Hunter dealership to supply Easytow trailers. Many years ago, the Easytow was more known for its classy ski boat trailers, but over recent years have developed a great range for the trailerable fishing boat market.

Easytow trailers are a simple yet robust design. They pride themselves on providing full keel support for the length of the boat while using side rollers for boat stability on the trailer rather than weight bearing. Easytow trailers are better for your boat and are a pleasure to tow.

The trailers are fitted with LED lights which eliminate the corrosion factor of globes and they also come with their famous Dura Hubs for bearing protection. The Dura Hub sight glass allows for easy inspection for moisture in the hubs and the rubber membrane eliminates the failure of seals due to hot bearings being placed in cold water. The Easytow Trailer is engineered for long lasting use with a minimum of maintenance.

The test boat was easily driven on and off the trailer with little effort from the driver as the self-centring trailer makes launch and retrieve a breeze.

The Haines Hunter 495 ProFish is definitely a ‘top of its class’ boat. As with any boat in the under 5m class, safety is paramount and the safety features that come with the Haines Hunter brand are second to none. As I mentioned earlier, the 60hp Honda four-stroke will power the boat adequately with two adults in calm seas, however if you plan to take more than two occupants, then the 75hp is the economical option while the 90hp will ensure you have more than adequate power should you need it. The team at New World Honda Marine use quality fit-out supplies to match the quality delivered by Haines Hunter.

If you are in the market for an entry size fishing boat, do yourself a favour and test drive the 495 ProFish today, you won’t be disappointed.
