VRFish is committed to representing and advocating the interests of the entire Victorian recreational fishing community. To ensure this, VRFish consults broadly with the recreational fishing community to represent the views of recreational fishers in an accurate and timely manner to Government and their agencies, as well as communicate effectively with the recreational fishers of Victoria.

As part of this commitment VRFish will be running a series of 10 “Open Houses” throughout Victoria based on the rollout of the Fishery Management Plans (FMP’s) across the recognised 10 Catchment Management Areas (CMA’s). The purpose of the Recreational Fishing Open House is to implement strategies and actions defined in the FMP’s. VRFish has been charged with the responsibility of implementing key elements of the FMP’s, such as; maintain or improve fishing access, facilities and opportunities and promote protection of important fish habitats.

The first of these Open Houses will be conducted in the North East FMP area and will be held on Saturday 1st August in the Embers Room of the Black Stump Motel in Wodonga. The North East Open House will assist by giving the recreational fishing community an opportunity to identify key projects for the North East Catchment. VRFish is also keen to discuss fish stocking proposals for the North East Catchment, with the aim to introduce three-year programs with Fisheries Victoria.

They will then be progressively held as follows:-

These Open Houses will be just that; open to all recreational fishers! So come along and have your input into the management of recreational fishing in your region. To assist us in planning for the North East Open House please RSVP your name, contact details and number of people attending by emailing --e-mail address hidden-- or calling Samantha Snowden-Finch on 9686 7077 by Friday 24 July 2009.

At this stage we are only taking expressions of interest for the remainder of the Open Houses so if you are interested in participating please contact Samantha.

The Parks Victoria Devilbend Reserve Management Plan Advisory Group will be reviewing submissions received on the draft management plan in mid June 2009. It is understood that all necessary risk assessments are nearly complete. The finalisation of the Management Plan should occur in the next three months and a steering committee will be formed to implement the Management Plan. VRFish anticipates that it will be invited to participate in this process.

Boating Victoria

Boating Victoria in partnership with Marine Safety Victoria is offering the Boat Smart Program, taking young boaters beyond the basic program to schools and youth groups free of charge. Aimed at young boaters between 15 and 18 years of age, the course is nationally accredited and aims to teach safe and responsible boating practices to young boaters. After successful completion of the course, students are issued with a Marine Safety Victoria certificate that they can take to VicRoads and obtain their Victorian Powerboat Operators License without any further testing.

The Boat Smart course is run over three days, one of which is on water practical boat handling. The aim is to give the students both the theory required to safely operate a powered vessel in Victorian waters and a practical grounding in how to control a boat when they get out on the water. The courses are run at various Yachting Australia Training Centres throughout the state, and only operate with qualified Instructors committed to giving their students the best possible course and boating experience.

If you are interested in this program and would like some more information please don’t hesitate to contact Ian Fox on 0413 615 874 or --e-mail address hidden--

A final quick point is that VRFish has finalised their 2009 – 2010 Business Plan. It is available online at our website at www.vrfish.com.au

Hope to see you at the Melbourne Boat Show being held 2 July 2009 – 6 July 2009.
