Winter at Bemm River is all about lure fishing, and with plenty of bream and trevally about, anglers are having a fantastic time.

More locals have been captivated by the lure bug, including Russ Francis, who on his second outing using vibe lures landed a 43cm bream with a great deal of excitement.

On this outing he and Don Cunningham caught and released more than 40 fish.

Fish beware, Russ is now addicted to retirement and vibes.

Four very prominent Melbourne businessmen enjoyed their stay recently with exceptional weather and fishing.

Kevin decided to go surf fishing, which has been quite reliable of late.

Spending a lot of time packing his gear, he asked his mate to drop him off at the surf beach. When Dennis and the boys returned hours later to collect him they found him asleep on the beach and had not wet a line because he forgot his reels!

Keith and Brian Parr of the Latrobe Valley also had good surf fishing recently.

They caught numerous trevally in the surf using bluebait and silver lures.

Winter water temperatures really lend themselves to consistent surf fishing around Bemm River, and with some of those wonderful calm winter days making it very pleasurable to fish on the beach.

The health of the Bemm is noticeable by the great quantity of small fish that have been detected by anglers ranging from 5cm through to the large fish.

It proves that we have once again endured a flourishing spawning period and bodes well for the future.

It still amuses me to witness the ongoing ‘antics’ at our local launching facility, such as the amount of boat owners who forget to put the bungs in before they launch their boat.

One angler recently sat in his vehicle while his wife struggled in the vicious easterly wind to hook their boat onto the trailer after a day’s fishing.

She ended up falling into the water.

This did not encourage him to get out and help her.

Thankfully other anglers came to her rescue.
